Since January there have been more than 730 evictions initiated in Southeastern MA. The Coalition for Social Justice has been reaching out to people and here are just a couple of stories:
- One woman had started the RAFT application process but her landlord has refused to participate. After first saying he would accept the RAFT program, he then refused to produce documents to complete her application. The tenant had been living in the same apartment with her two kids for many years and it seemed like the landlord just didn’t want her to live there anymore. She missed a court hearing scheduled on Zoom, and instead appeared in person (as directed) without being aware the court was physically closed.
- Another couple was evicted due to a change in ownership when the new owners raised the rent by $400 dollars a month. The landlord doesn’t live in the area and hasn’t been by once since they lived there to fix anything.
The State eviction moratorium ended on March 31st, and there were 100+ more evictions filed in just the month of March!
We’ll be discussing the the rights of renters and small landlords, as well as explaining the eviction process and programs that help people at risk of evictions. We’ll also talk about some of the opportunities for improving the current system and the housing movement in MA.
