Because of COVID-19 we were unable to hold our annual Freedom Fund Breakfast last June. Our backup date in August was a bit over-optimistic, so plan C was to hold an informal awards ceremony in the Fall.
Thanks to our donors — many from the community who really stepped up this year — we were able to hold the 2020 Stand for Justice High School Graduate Scholarship Fund ceremony on October 10th. Despite clouds, chill, wind, masks and social distancing, the ceremony was joyous and successful.
Ten students received awards in 2020: Yileisy Almada (New Bedford Voc), attending Bay Path College and majoring in Child Psychology; Olimpia Andrade (New Bedford High), attending Spelman College and majoring in Political Science; Thaliah Barros (New Bedford High), attending Massasoit College and majoring in Education; Jacelina Goncalves (New Bedford High), attending Gordon College and majoring in Early Education; Devin Moreira (New Bedford High), attending UMASS Dartmouth and majoring in Mechanical Engineering; Eijah Ribeiro (New Bedford High), attending Bridgewater State University and majoring in Civil Engineering; Grace Saluto (Bishop Stang), attending Loyola University Chicago and majoring in Environmental Science; Corelys Santiago Cruz (New Bedford High), attending UMASS Dartmouth and majoring in Biology; Jaden Taylor (Bishop Stang), attending Bridgewater State University and majoring in Psychology; Stacylina Texeira (New Bedford High), attending UMASS Dartmouth and majoring in Nursing.
